Lecture Reflection

Eric Garcia

When I saw the lecture, it was not surprising to hear that he had to work around political prisoners when working on his drawings. It can be hard to work on paintings when so many things are politicized, even if you do what a majority of the people around you agree with because there will always be someone who goes against your views. I have views that most people around me agree with, and I work with others to see what they think. When doing so, I get to have the opinions of others, and they help me see what I can do to work with what a majority of the people around me like.

When he made murals of calaveras for the Day of the Dead, it looked good to me because I knew they were important for the memories of their ancestors who got them there. Looking back on my ancestry is important to me too, so I can see why they want to do it as well. It is important to know how your ancestors got you where you are today because you otherwise will not know how you got to where you are today. In fact, the likelihood that you would be in a different place if your ancestors had taken a different path too is pretty high because where your descendants go in the future can be dependent on where you go and how you get there.

I liked the birds’ nest sculpture he made out of wooden cutouts of guns because it helped to see how you could connect things that are not usually related to each other. It was also nice to see the bird building the nest because it showed that a bird could live in one of those things in his imagination, even if it never happens in real life. Nests are made out of wooden sticks, so it is good they got the nests made out of something made of wood too.

Robin Jebavy

Having paintings like what Robin Jebavy showed us helps us to see what looked good for her. She was a good at showing us paintings and how she did them. When she cut paintings out, she wanted to show the painted parts of them. When cutting them out we got to see just the artistic part of the paintings.

It is also nice that she gets to have her paintings at Lake Forest College now since she is a good artist. Having your paintings hung at a college is nice because it inspires their students. When they see what other people have done with art, they might come up with better ideas of what to do themselves. They could even come up with completely new ideas that no one has ever done before, even if the artist they see has not done anything even close to that.

Having paintings of the drink glasses before her grandmother passed away were helpful for remembering her. In fact, looking back on the things you used to do with a family member you care about is a great way to continue their legacy. It sounded like her grandmother was important to her and inspired her to do so many important things with her art. When her grandmother got to work with the family, she not only inspired them through their artwork, but also got to spend quality time while doing so. When you remember someone you care about, they will always be in your heart and care for you.
